Looking for an enriching experience for your teen between the ages of 14 - 18? The City of Edmonds Sister City Commission will send a delegation of up to 15 students, ages 14 – 18, to their Sister City of Hekinan, Japan, during the summer of 2017 in mid-July for two weeks. Then, in early August, a student delegation from Hekinan will visit the Edmonds area for two weeks.
These student exchanges are part of the mission of the Edmonds Sister City Commission which is “to promote international communication and understanding through exchanges of people, ideas, and culture” and they have been taking place for over 23 years.
While in Hekinan, the students will stay with host families. Students and their families will be financially responsible for their roundtrip airfare, as well as a portion of the cost for chaperones. Edmonds area students who are interested in participating are encouraged to visit the Commission’s webpage for an application packet and more information. Application deadline has been extended to Thursday, March 23, 2017.
For an application packet click here or contact the Mayor's Office at 425.771.0247.
For more information visit the Commission's exchange programs webpage.
In 2016, a Pedestrian Safety Task Force was created due to increase in pedestrian accidents that occurred in prior years. The mission was to increase safety for pedestrians and other active transportation users throughout the City through an education program and creative solutions. Their focus until 2018 was on educating seniors by making presentations in front of various local groups (such as Senior Center, Kiwanis, etc.). In 2019, the focus was extended to the school kids with programs being held at several Edmonds schools with collaboration with the Edmonds School District (Seaview Elementary, Sherwood Elementary, and Edmonds Elementary). In-class presentations were made, followed by field trips where the kids need to apply the proper pedestrian safety measures under real-time conditions (such as steps to complete prior to crossing at a crosswalk, proper ways to cross at a traffic signal, items to not wear when walking, etc.). The following links provide helpful pedestrian safety tips for the various users:
The committee is always looking to make presentations in front of a local group (whether virtual or in-person). The presentation takes approximately 30 minutes and includes 15 minutes for Q&A.If you are interested, please contact Mr. Bertrand Hauss (City of Edmonds Transportation Engineer) at 425-754-5325 or bertrand.hauss@edmondswa.gov.
