One Finished... Another Begins

One of my favorite treats as Mayor is being aware of the various projects and improvements in the city that are being completed, in progress, or starting. By this time of year, many of our outside projects are drawing to conclusion. Most notable this year: refurbishment of the fishing pier; additional work on our street overlay program; more work on water lines and sewer lines; along with improvements to our storm water network. While some of these projects do cause temporary inconvenience, ultimately, they are improvements worth the hassle.

One project nearing completion is a new downtown public restroom, located between City Hall and the Rusty Pelican on 5th Ave North. This is an amenity which is a long time coming and will be appreciated by the business community as well as shoppers and tourists. The restroom will be open by Halloween with final touches scheduled to be done in early November.

During the rest of the year staff will be working on other major projects such as; design of Civic Field (which we purchased from the School District this year), completion of the Highway 99 subarea plan, major improvements to the city IT infrastructure, and physical improvements to the many city-owned properties. Along with that, we will be engaged in the Olympia Legislative session for the various Capital needs and policy issues important to the City and Snohomish County… busy times!

Sister City Commission Accepting Chaperone Applications for 2017 Student Exchange

The Edmonds Sister City Commission is accepting applications from teachers/administrators interested in co-leading the annual student visit to Hekinan, Japan during the last two weeks of July 2017. This program was started in 1988 and has organized visits for over 500 middle and high school aged students to and from Hekinan, Japan. Chaperones stay with a host family in Hekinan and travel costs are paid by the Commission.

The 2016 delegation chaperones, Edmonds School District teachers Anita Kotik and Robert Allen, recently escorted eight Edmonds School District students on the trip. They express what a “fabulous opportunity this was to travel to Japan and experience the Japanese culture” and also talk about “building lasting relationships with many of the people in Hekinan”.

Downtown Public Restroom Set to Open by Halloween

downtown restroomAfter years of discussions, planning and even appearing in the City’s Strategic Action Plan, new Downtown restrooms will become a reality this Fall, serving visitors, shoppers and passers-by within Downtown Edmonds. The Downtown Restroom will be located in the parking lot just south of City Hall, next to the Rusty Pelican restaurant. A soft opening is scheduled for Halloween, just in time for the Trick or Treat festivities, with full completion of exterior treatment, landscaping and parking lot striping to follow into November. The facility will feature Men’s, Women’s and Unisex/Family restrooms and be set in a landscaped plaza. The parking lot will be reconfigured so as to reduce parking by no more than two stalls. An ADA-compliant access ramp will lead from the 5th Avenue sidewalk into the site. The design of the restroom is intended to continue the commercial streetscape aesthetic, with brick treatment, an overhead canopy, brick parapet and large display cases that mimic storefront windows. The display cases will feature artistic and historical displays. This project was made possible by contributions from the Edmonds Downtown Alliance, Edmonds Noon Rotary, Hubbard Family Foundation, and Edmonds Lodging Tax revenue in addition to funds from the City’s Real Estate Excise Tax proceeds.
